How to grow Beetroot

Beetroot grown on the allotment can supply the kitchen all year round even in Scotland through succession sowing and planting and careful storage.

Harvested from the plot from late June and used from storage until late March.

The time from March to late June can be filled by using pickled beetroot which can last a few years once pickled in jars.

Beetroot can be slow to germinate and tricky on occasions, and be very slow to grow in the initial stages, but once it kicks off,  it really grows very well to maturity. Use the beets at a young stage just over an inch in diameter for tender young whole beetroot.
